Broken Tooth Repair at Your Service

Accidents happen, and sometimes that results in broken teeth. When a tooth chips or breaks, it may not hurt, but it does need to be addressed by a dentist quickly. Broken tooth repair is a service we offer here at Dentists of Plenty Valley, whether you have a cracked molar or a chipped front tooth.

Chipped or broken teeth may feel sharp and uncomfortable to your tongue and cheek, and if a large piece of the tooth breaks off, it may hurt the nerve inside the tooth and cause more extreme discomfort. This extra sensitivity can also occur when nerve endings in the dentin are exposed to air, or too hot or cold foods or drinks.

Pain from a broken or cracked tooth may be constant or may come and go. Many people feel pain when they chew because chewing puts pressure on the tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depending on the severity of your broken tooth, this can be relatively easy, such as a simple direct filling like a composite (white) filling. Composites are available in a range of shades to match your teeth and are biocompatible with your natural teeth, meaning they can bond directly to the remaining tooth structure.

If the chip is very small, the dentist may polish and smooth out the chipped area. If the crack/fracture is bigger and tooth does need a restoration, the choice of material used depends on your needs and budget and take into account aesthetic considerations, strength requirements and the amount of remaining tooth structure. Other options include dental crowns and bridges, but these will also depend on your own oral health and jawbone density.

Indirect restoration is an option for teeth that have lost a significant amount of tooth structure, or where aesthetics is of importance. This is similar to dental fillings, but rather than being directly placed into your tooth and then set, indirect restorations are fabricated in a dental laboratory and then cemented into place. This process requires two appointments; one to prepare the tooth surface and one to fit the restoration. Examples would include onlay/inlay, crowns and veneers. These can also be made with different materials like porcelain, gold or zircon.

Broken tooth repair is very subjective to the type of break and which tooth (or teeth) has been impacted, as well as the desired outcome – for instance, if your broken tooth requires extra cosmetic work done to restore it to a more natural appearance. A chipped tooth repair cost may vary greatly from a hairline fracture on a back molar. For more information please call us to book an appointment on 03 9716 0161
